John F. McCarthy, Sc.D., C.I.H.

John McCarthy is President of Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E), a private engineering consulting firm based in Newton, Massachusetts, specializing in development and implementation of environmental and occupational management systems. Dr. McCarthy holds a B.S. in biology from Boston College, an M.S. in industrial hygiene and environmental health sciences from Harvard University, and an Sc.D. in environmental science and physiology from Harvard University

Dr. McCarthy has managed a variety of multidisciplinary studies for hospitals, schools, and corporations. These investigations have included evaluation of chemical, particulate, and microbiological contaminants in the environment. Of particular focus has been health effects related to contaminants, including risk analysis of various hazardous exposures.

Under Dr. McCarthy’s direction, EH&E managed the Building Assessment Survey and Evaluation, a five-year U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study in which indoor air quality information was compiled on 100 commercial buildings, creating a comprehensive database of information that will be used as guidance for further research. As a continuation of this study, EH&E has assisted EPA with further study design and data analysis. EH&E implemented a research study to assess building related asthma under a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Dr. McCarthy has authored more than fifty technical papers and book chapters and co-edited the IAQ Handbook (McGraw-Hill 2000), a comprehensive reference for building owners and managers regarding indoor environmental concerns. He serves as a consultant to the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, the Energy Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. McCarthy chaired IAQ 2004, a joint ASHRAE/ASHE conference held in Tampa, Florida.
